Leupold & Stevens were responsible for introducing the first truly fog-proof rifle scope made by Americans in 1947 which they called the “plainsman”. The legend has it that Marcus Leupold missed a buck whilst out hunting because his scope fogged up. He vowed he could make a better scope and that’s what he did.
Leupold Optics History
Fred Leupold and his brother-in-law and close friend Adam Volpel started their business in 1907. They started off hand making surveying equipment under the company name of Leupold & Volpel. In 1914, J. C. Stevens joins the company after inventing the first water level recorder, Marcus Leupold, Fred’s son, joins at the same time.
In 1942 the company changed their name to Leupold & Stevens and sometime in this decade Marcus missed his buck due to a fogged up scope and in 1947 invented the fog-proof scope. By purging all of the air from the scope and replacing it with nitrogen.
In 1968 the company moved to Beaverton Oregon, in 1974 they introduced the industry’s first lightweight, high-powered scope. Followed in 1978 with the industry’s first compact rifle scopes. In 1985 they entered the tactical optics market and supplied the U.S. military for the first time.
In 1986 they developed the first compact roof prism, waterproof spotting scope. In 1993 they introduced their first variable waterproof spotting scope (12-40×60). In the year 2000 Leupold introduced illuminated reticle technology for accurate shots in low-light conditions.
2010 saw them introduce True Golf Range ballistics software to compute the flight path of golf balls based on the angle of the shot and the conditions influenced by atmospherics.
