What Makes A Binocular Fog Proof?

A fog proof binocular is sealed to keep moisture out of the optical tubes. The air inside is then replaced with nitrogen or argon gas with very little or no moisture. 

This stops condensation from building up on the internal lenses.

Without this protection, a sudden temperature change from a warm place to a cold place could cause the inside of the binocular to fog up and become difficult to see through.

When Are Fog Proof Binoculars Useful?

Fog proof binoculars work well in a wide range of outdoor conditions. They are especially useful to users who often use binoculars in rain, fog, cold weather or coastal environments.

Nitrogen Vs Argon Purging

For most users, the difference between the two is unlikely to be noticeable during everyday use.

Most fog proof binoculars are filled with either nitrogen or argon gas.

Nitrogen is the more common option and gives good protection against internal fogging. Both gases do the same basic job but Argon is denser than Nitrogen and is sometimes used in higher end binoculars.

For everyday use, most users probably won’t notice a difference between the two.

Are Fog Proof Binoculars Also Waterproof?

Many fog proof binoculars also are waterproof but the two features are not the same.

Fog proofing stops condensation on the inside and waterproofing means water won’t get in the binocular. Most modern outdoor binoculars feature both, making them better suited to challenging weather conditions.

Choosing Fog Proof Binoculars

Compare binoculars to see if they are nitrogen purged or argon purged. That usually means they are fog proof.

Magnification, lens size, weight and field of view are worth looking at, as are weather protection features.
