The Brent Goose (Branta bernicla) is a common wintering bird in the UK. Brent Geese are the smallest of all geese seen in the UK and are only just slightly larger than the Mallard.
They have a brown-grey back and a black head and neck with a small white patch on the neck. There are two different Brent Geese species that both overwinter in the UK.
Those that nest in Northern Russia and Siberia have darker bellies and can be seen around the coasts of East Anglia and Southern England. While those that nest in Svalbard and Greenland have lighter bellies and are mostly seen around North East England and Ireland.

The average lifespan of a Brent Goose is around 11 years with each bird reaching sexual maturity at around 2 years of age. However, there are exceptions to their lifespan, with one individual bird reaching an age of 28 years and 2 months according to ring data.

Brent Geese can fly at speeds of around 50 to 65 km/h (31 to 40 mph). However, during migration, with favourable tailwinds, they can reach even higher speeds.

The female will lay a clutch of 3 to 5 eggs that she incubates on her own. Although the male stays close by, protecting the nest and his mate and eggs.

Brent Geese are precocial birds which means their eyes are open and they are mobile as soon as they hatch. This is an important survival feature as it allows them to leave the nest site quickly which reduces their vulnerability almost as soon as they hatch.

When Do Brent Goose Chicks Fledge?
The young goslings spend around 40 to 50 days with their parents before they fledge. However, even after fledging, the younglings still spend time with their extended family groups.
Often migrating whilst still staying with their wider family group.
