Male Blue Tit

Blue Tit

Scientific name: Cyanistes caeruleus

Did you know: Blue Tits can adjust their breeding season based on the availability of green caterpillars, which are crucial for the survival of their chicks?

What Do Blue Tits Look Like? (how to identify them)

Blue Tits are delightful with their vibrant mix of blue, yellow, white, and green colours, making them one of the most recognisable birds in gardens across the UK.

These small passerine birds flaunt an azure-blue crown and a striking dark blue line through their eye, encircling their white cheeks to their chin, giving them a unique and distinctive appearance.

Their wings and tail boast a bright blue, while their underparts are a vivid sulphur-yellow, highlighted with a dark line down the middle.

Differences Between Male and Female Blue Tits

Male and Female Blue Tits are generally similar in appearance, making them often hard to distinguish. However, under ultraviolet light, males exhibit a brighter blue crown, which is less vivid in females.

This distinction is not typically visible to the human eye but can be detected under specific lighting conditions.

What Do Blue Tits Eat?

Blue Tits have a diet primarily consisting of insects and spiders, showcasing their acrobatic skills by hanging upside down on branches to forage for food.

During the non-breeding season, they also consume seeds and other plant-based foods.

Their agility allows them to explore the outermost branches of trees and shrubs, making them entertaining to watch at feeders, where they’re often seen swinging below holders.

Where Do Blue Tits Live? (including migration info)

The Blue Tit is a common resident throughout temperate and subarctic Europe and the western Palearctic, thriving in deciduous and mixed woodlands, particularly those with a high proportion of oak.

They are mostly non-migratory, staying within their territory year-round. However, they nest in tree holes and readily adapt to nest boxes, making gardens and parks with these installations likely spots to find them.

Bird Calls & Songs (the unique voices of Blue Tits)

Blue Tits are vocal birds, using their calls and songs to communicate, especially during mating season and to mark their territory.

Their typical call is a trilling ‘tee, tee, tee’ or a more aggressive ‘churr’ when alarmed. Their communication repertoire includes songs to attract mates and various calls, such as alarm calls that alert other birds of potential threats.
