Binocular Carrying Straps, Harnesses, Pouches & Cases

When you’re birdwatching, hiking or exploring the outdoors, you usually carry binoculars for hours at a time. 

Most binoculars come with a simple neck strap but many users choose other accessories for comfort and protecting your equipment.

Straps, harnesses, pouches and cases all have different uses and the right choice often depends on how and where the binoculars will be used.

Binocular Carrying Straps

A carrying strap is the most common way to bring binoculars. Most attach directly to the binocular and allow it to hang around the neck when not in use.

Padded straps can help with heavier binoculars and make a noticeable difference. These can ease the pressure on your neck on longer walks. Usually, a standard strap will suffice for occasional use.

Binocular Harnesses

A binocular harness spreads the weight across both shoulders instead of putting it all on your neck.

This can help make carrying binoculars more comfortable, especially with larger models or when you are outside for a number of hours. 

Harnesses also help keep binoculars close to the body, which reduces movement when you are walking. This is why lots of birdwatchers and wildlife watchers like harnesses.

Binocular Pouches

A binocular pouch is a great way to carry and protect binoculars when not in use. Most pouches are lightweight and allow quick access to the binocular without having to open a larger bag. Some can be clipped onto your belt or backpack, which is handy for hiking and travel.

Binocular Cases

Cases offer more protection than pouches and are often used in storage or transport. Many cases have padding inside to protect the binoculars from knocks, scratches and dust. 

Hard cases offer the best protection but soft cases are generally lighter and easier to carry.

Which Option Is Best?

There is no single solution that suits everyone. Some users are perfectly happy with a simple carrying strap, while others prefer the comfort of a harness or the additional protection of a case. 

It depends largely on how often you use them and the conditions under which you carry them.
